I've been spending some quality time on the bench this week working on my .223 loads for a new precision build. I've settled on a good powder but need advice on OAL; any thoughts? Would love to see what others are making for their .223 handloads.
Be extra careful cause small changes in OAL can really affect pressure and performance, are you making sure to follow safe load practices while testing your rounds?
I've been tinkering with .223 loads too. For OAL, I usually start a few thousandths shorter than max cartridge length and work up, testing for accuracy. Small tweaks make a big difference at the range
I usually start off around 2.250" for those standard 55 to 62gr bullets. But when I'm working with the heavier match bullets, like the 69 and 77grs, I tend to push it a bit further out, maybe between 2.260" and 2.270". It all depends on what my magazine and the throat can handle. If you're really after that pinpoint accuracy, investing in a comparator and doing some seating depth tests can seriously help you fine-tune everything.
