what's a good beginner setup for fishing with my kid

I'm looking to take my 5-year-old fishing for the first time and I have no clue where to start. I saw some kid-sized fishing rods at the store and wondered if they'd work for us. I've never really fished before, but I think it could be a fun way to spend some time together. Any recommendations on what to take, like bait or how to keep it simple for us both?
