I just hit the legal age to carry a firearm openly here in Delaware, and I'm feeling pretty excited about it. But honestly, I could really use some advice from those of you who’ve been doing this for a while. What are the best practices I should know?

First things first, make sure you really know the law like the back of your hand. Delaware has some particular rules around carrying, how to deal with the police, and what they consider brandishing. It’s super important to stay up-to-date on all this stuff and to treat everyone with respect while you’re at it.

It's really important to stay aware of what's going on around you and how people might respond to your actions. Keeping a cool head and treating others with respect can make a huge difference. Make sure you're using a good quality holster that keeps your firearm secure but also visible. And try not to handle your weapon in public unless you really have to. Also, be sure to know the spots where carrying isn’t allowed.

It’s really important to practice de-escalation and verbal control. As a gun owner, you’re stepping up to be someone others might turn to in tough moments, and that’s a huge responsibility. The aim here isn’t to stir up conflict, it’s all about keeping things calm and collected. And let’s not forget about regular training. Hitting the range is nice, but make sure to focus on drawing from your holster, do some dry fire drills, and get a grip on how you handle stress.
